In 1846 Nelson Hawks, a migrant from New York, established the area’s first inn, providing travelers with accommodations. Hawks named the community that developed around the hotel after the owner of the area’s first grist mill, Charles Delafield.
Nestled in the northwestern reaches of Delafield, the Nashotah House Theological Seminary, a bastion of theological scholarship, saw its inception in 1842.
The annals of 1858 witnessed the foundation of St. John’s Preparatory School in the southwestern precincts of Delafield by none other than Bishop Kemper. In 1884, a transformation took place, rechristening the institution as St. John’s Military Academy.
Adding to the tapestry of Delafield’s history, it’s essential to recognize the valiant Cushing brothers, who wholeheartedly served the Union’s cause during the tumultuous days of the Civil War. Their legacy lives on in Cushing Memorial Park, an hallowed sanctuary housing a poignant war memorial erected in perpetual honor of their unwavering valor.
